INDUS
Sizes air-duct networks. INDUS can handle both supply and extract systems, and can size the ducts according to the following design procedures: constant friction, constant-velocity or static-regain. The network can be made up from branches of any combination of duct sectional shapes, and sizing limits can be imposed for each branch in the network (such as fixed size, maximum depth, maximum velocity). INDUS can be used for sizing systems from scratch, or as a check on an existing system, when duct sizes and flow rates are specified. It accounts for the effects of diversity in VAV systems, and for supply systems automatically accounts for duct-heat pick up and the consequent volume-flow changes through the system. The system can be balanced using dampers only, or by resizing non-index runs. Dampers are always placed to minimize the number required.

Expertise Required
Experience with duct design.
Users
Many throughout the UK and Europe.
Audience
Mechanical building services engineers.
Input
General design data such as design method, and maximum velocities. The range of available duct sizes that may be used. Predefinition of common duct parameters. Information about each duct, including connections, lengths, and codes indicating the types of connected fittings, and design limits.
Output
Single-page printouts of input data or results. Output file with selected input data and results. Results for each section of ductwork: duct size, total k-factor based on input fitting codes, total pressure loss in the duct, pressure loss across balancing damper if a damper is needed, velocity, temperatures, and pressure-loss gradient. Results for the complete system: fan total pressure, fan static pressure, fan flow rate, fan air power, installed mass of ductwork, identification of the index path, and an optional list of parts.
Computer Platform
PC running Windows 95, 98 or NT (3.51 or higher). 100 MB RAM. 100 MB disk space. CD-ROM drive.
Programming Language
Visual Basic, Fortran 77
Strengths
Can deal with circular, rectangular and flat-oval ducts. Allows detailed control over sizing of ducts. Can be used for checking existing duct networks, even when the sizes are non-standard.
Weaknesses
Fitting details are not entered separately from the ducts but are entered with the duct data as special codes.
